Certified Medical Assistants work in hospitals and doctors’ offices and are often the first person you meet after a receptionist. They are a critical part of the healthcare team and make a lasting impression on patients. Certification for Medical Assistants is provided through the National Healthcare Association.
Duties can include administrative and clinical tasks such as the following:
- Taking medical histories
- Explaining treatment procedures to patients
- Preparing patients for examinations
- Assisting the doctor during examinations
- Collecting and preparing lab specimens
- Performing basic lab tests
- Instructing patients about medication and special diets
- Transmitting prescription refills as directed
- Phlebotomy
- Taking electrocardiograms
- Wound care and changing dressings
- Welcoming patients
- Updating and filing patient medical records
- Coding and filling out insurance forms
- Scheduling appointments
- Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
