Course Description: This course is required to apply for licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). This course introduces the theory and application of concepts related to the profession of the EMT. The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Topics include: airway and ventilation management, medication administration, cardiac arrest management, as well as the assessment and management of various medical illnesses and traumatic injuries. This course is based on the NHTSA National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards.

The Emergency Medical Technician course prepares the student to provide prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services (EMS) systems, roles and responsibilities of EMTs, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, special considerations for working in the prehospital setting, and providing patient transportation.  The course is meant for both those students that are new to EMS and those that have obtained EMR or VEFR licensure.  EMT is the primary licensure for any transporting EMS service. 

The course will have twice weekly lectures on Monday and Wednesday evenings, which will include homework and assignments with regular online exams.  The course will also have skills sessions, which are mandatory for all participants, and are scheduled about every other Saturday.  EMT skill sessions and practical scenarios will be evaluated by community responders and supervised by the faculty.   

Course completion requirements include:

• Complete each of five section exams with a minimum score of 70%, within two attempts.
• Complete the final exam, with a minimum score of 70%, within two attempts.
• Successfully complete VT EMT Competency Portfolio

*Students must complete all course requirements and meet all attendance requirements prior to receiving approval to participate in any National Registry of EMT testing.  

Please note: Students will be responsible for scheduling their own licensure exam with the National Registry of EMT’s. 

Course Prerequisites

All candidates shall complete the following in order to participate in this course:

• Be at least 18 years old as of December 1, 2026
• Be physically willing and able to fully participate in patient care, skills, and scenarios
• Have and maintain a current AHA Healthcare Provider (BLS) CPR certification
• Have completed online ICS 100, ICS 200, NIMS 700 training
